News of the Day! The 1000 Islands Writers Festival Launch Party Fundraiser on Saturday April 1st was a fabulous experience for all who took part. Together we celebrated our Canadian roots with period food prepared by our town’s young talent: students of the Hospitality Studies course of GISS (Gananoque and Intermediate Secondary School) under the guidance of Chef Hill. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn about their own own food history as showcased in the book Sir John’s Table while taking part in a memorable community event.
The Festival committee would life to say thank you to our guest speakers author Lindy Mechefske for readings from her book, Sir John’s Table, that evoked surprise and laughter; and our own Sir John A MacDonald and Agnes for the night, Brian and Renee Porter who brought our First Prime Minister and his wife to life with letters, stories and notable Sir John A. humor. Thank you also our Town Crier Brian Mabee who rang in the night with a proclamation recognizing the significance of the occasion and formally announcing the great events to come for the 1000 Islands Writers Festival from 5 – 7 May, 2017. Special thanks to Bernard Hudson for his role as Emcee in leading all the fun and frivolity; and to the amazingly talented band Turpin’s Trail with their performance of great Celtic folk music that was enjoyed buy all. Together with music and guests the 1800’s was brought to life for an unforgettable celebration of Canada 150.
Thank you to the Town of Gananoque, The Thousand Islands Playhouse and the Gananoque Brewing Company for sponsorship and partnership that allowed the night to be such a success.
And most of all, thank you to all our guests who came out to show their support and celebrate with us. The festivities have just begun! Looking forward to May 5th as we prepare for the grand opening of the festival with our Honorary Patron Terry Fallis, Spoken Word Artist PrufRock Shadowrunner, and announcement of the winners of our youth Creative Designs Contest. See you there!
